The Grossing Technician plays a critical role in the laboratory’s specimen processing and examination procedures. Working under the supervision of pathologists and laboratory management, the Grossing Technician is responsible for accurately and meticulously performing gross examination of surgical specimens. This involves assessing the macroscopic features, dimensions, and identifying abnormalities of the specimens. The Grossing Technician also handles specimen processing tasks, including embedding, sectioning, and slide mounting, ensuring the specimens are prepared for further analysis.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Gross Examination: Conduct gross examination of surgical specimens, demonstrating proficiency in specimen description and dissection. Collaborate with pathologists to ensure accurate specimen representation
  • Specimen Processing: Prepare and process tissue samples for further analysis, including embedding, sectioning, and slide mounting, with proper labeling and tracking
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments used in grossing, tissue processing, and embedding
  • Recordkeeping: Maintain detailed records of accessioning, labeling, and tracking specimens for accurate documentation and traceability
  • Compliance with SOPs and Safety Protocols: Adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols for a clean and organized work environment and safe handling of hazardous materials
  • Collaboration: Work closely with pathologists, histotechnologists, and laboratory personnel for a smooth workflow and accurate specimen analysis
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Participate in quality control and assurance programs, promptly reporting any issues or discrepancies
  • Training and Orientation: Assist in training and orienting new staff members, ensuring adherence to CAP guidelines, laboratory protocols, and safety procedures
  • Professional Development: Stay updated with advancements in pathology techniques through workshops, conferences, and continuing education programs
  • Adherence to CAP Guidelines: Maintain knowledge of and comply with CAP guidelines for specimen handling, processing, and documentation
  • Ethical Standards and Patient Confidentiality: Uphold ethical standards, ensuring patient confidentiality and data privacy

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in science in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR  education/training equivalent to the above that includes the following:
  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
  • Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least three months of recorded laboratory training in gross examination of tissue
  • BLS certification or ability to obtain within the first 30 days of employment
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Histotechnician (HT) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or another national accrediting agency 
  • 1+ years of practical experience in gross examination of tissue
     

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you’ll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The hourly pay for this role will range from $23.41 to $41.83 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
